The Hexi Stars Quilt

The summer of 2021 was a very inspirational time for me in terms of quilt pattern design. I had just made the Big Sky Star Quilt by Plains and Pine, and I also took a Krista Moser class at a local quilt shop. Both of these experiences really opened my eyes to a whole area of quilts I had never explored before. Lindlee, of Plains and Pine, with her incredible lone star quilts that are stunningly beautiful, and Krista Moser, with her 60 degree angles and fun inventive patterns really changed the way I looked at pattern design. Both of these amazing women influenced the Hexi Stars Quilt.

The first Hexi Stars Quilt I made was a twin size fat quarter version using the Community Fabric by Citrus and Mint Designs. These colors are just so fun and vibrant. I love how the stars almost look like they are exploding in the fat quarter versions of this pattern. The variety in color and shade add so much dimension to the stars. I never get sick of looking at them.

The second version I made was a throw size fat quarter version using the Stellar Fabrics by Rashida Coleman Hale of Ruby Star Society, and Kona Cotton Slate as the background. I have been calling the fat quarter version of this pattern the “Color Chaos,” version. I really don’t think you could go wrong with any combination of fabrics for this quilt. The randomness of it makes it fun and eye catching. This pattern is a perfect stash buster. If you have some lonely fat quarters that need a home, just mix them together and make a Hexi Stars Quilt.

I made two different baby size quilts, and both are the two-color version. unlike the color explosion chaos of the fat quarter version, the two-color version is more uniform and refined. The black and white version is made using the Speckled Fabrics from Ruby Star Society in Galaxy, White Gold, and Cactus as the background. (Side note, this fabric is so soft and is now my personal favorite basic/blender.) The pink and white version was made using fabrics I have been hoarding for months (or maybe years). I believe I used Kona Snow and Kona Peony for the star, and the background is a petite floral print that really shines as the focus for this quilt.

The Hexi Stars Quilt pattern has four size options: baby (36” x 36”), throw (54” x 64”), twin (64” x 96”), and queen (96” x 100”). This quilt is also made with no Y seams. Thats right, no Y seams! It’s actually pretty easy to make. I did still label this as an intermediate pattern because there is a lot of seam matching that may be difficult for a beginner quilter. This pattern does have a template you use to cut your fabric, but if you feel like investing in a 60 degree angle ruler, I use the 60 degree Diamond by Krista Moser for Creative Grids. It is worth buying if you would like to make quilts with 60 degree angles. It is very versatile, and I use mine all the time.
